How to Reset a Forgotten Password Safely
What this helps with: Getting back into your account when you can’t remember the password, without getting locked out or tricked.
Forgetting a password happens to everyone. The safe way to fix it is always the same: use the “Forgot password?” link on the real website or app, and never through a link someone sends you.
The safe steps (any account)
- Go to the account yourself. Open the app you normally use, or type the website address yourself.
- What you’ll tap: The app’s own icon on your home screen. Don’t use a link from a text or email you weren’t expecting.
- Tap Sign in, then tap Forgot password?
- What you’ll tap: Small words, usually under the password box.
- Follow the steps on screen. You’ll usually get a code by text or email.
- Type the code into the app or website.
- Never tell this code to anyone, even someone who says they’re from the company. Real companies won’t call you to ask for it.
- Make a new password. A good one is long. Four or more random words in a row works well, like maple river teacup lantern.
- Write it down and keep it somewhere safe at home, or save it in a password manager.
For an Apple Account (iPhone, iPad, Mac)
- If you’re still signed in on your iPhone or iPad, you can change the password there: open Settings, tap your name, tap Sign-In & Security, then Change Password. You’ll use your phone’s passcode.
- If you’re not signed in anywhere, look for Forgot password? on the sign-in screen, or go to iforgot.apple.com.
- You may be asked for your trusted phone number to get a code.
If none of that works, Apple has an account recovery process. It can take several days, on purpose, to keep your account safe. Let it finish.
For a Google Account (Gmail, Android)
- On the sign-in page, tap Forgot password?
- Answer the questions as best you can. Wrong guesses won’t lock you out.
- Use the same phone or computer you usually use, in a place you usually use it. That helps Google recognize you.
If something goes wrong
- I don’t get the code. Wait a minute, then tap Resend. Check your email’s spam folder. Make sure your phone has signal.
- I changed my phone number. You may need the longer account recovery process. Follow the on-screen steps; it may take a few days.
- Someone offers to “recover” my account for a fee. Don’t use them. Google says it doesn’t work with any account recovery service, and you can’t call Google for sign-in help.
- I think someone else got into my account. Change your password right away, then turn on two-step login (see our guide).
