How to Use Your Doctor’s Patient Portal
What this helps with: Signing in to your doctor’s website or app to see test results, send a message, or check your next visit.
This guide shows how to use the portal. For questions about your health or your results, ask your doctor or care team.
What a patient portal is
A patient portal is a private website or app from your doctor’s office or hospital. It’s usually free. MyChart is one common example, but there are many others. Ask your doctor’s office which one they use.
In a portal, you may be able to:
- See test results and visit notes
- Send a message to your care team (for things that aren’t urgent)
- Make or check appointments
- Ask for a refill, or pay a bill
The steps
- Get the right app or link. Ask your doctor’s office, or look at your visit paperwork. Use only the website or app they give you.
- What you’ll tap: The App Store (iPhone) or Google Play (Android). Search for the name they gave you. Check that the app is made by the right company.
- Sign up. Tap Sign up or Create account. The office may give you an activation code. You’ll also need your name and birthday.
- Make a strong password. Your phone can save it for you. You may also get a code by text to prove it’s you. Type that code only into the portal.
- Find your results. Look for Test Results or Health. Tap a result to open it.
- Send a message. Look for Messages, then New message or Ask a question. Type your question and tap Send.
- Sign out when you’re done, if you use a shared computer or tablet.
Reading test results
- Results sometimes show up in the portal before your doctor has looked at them. That’s normal.
- Words and numbers can be confusing. Some may be marked high or low. Please don’t worry alone. Send your doctor a message or call the office and ask what it means for you.
Staying safe
- Never share your password or text codes, even with someone who says they’re from the office.
- A family member can get their own access. Many portals let you give a trusted person their own sign-in, called proxy access. That’s safer than sharing your password. Ask the office how.
- Be careful with emails and texts about your portal. Instead of tapping a link, open the app or website yourself.
If something goes wrong
- I forgot my password. Tap Forgot password? on the sign-in screen. Or call your doctor’s office.
- I can’t find my results. They may take a few days. Ask the office if you’re not sure.
- The portal says my account is locked. Wait a few minutes, or call the office for help.
- For anything urgent, call your doctor’s office. Portal messages can take a day or more to answer. For an emergency, call 911.

This is general help, not medical advice or personalized tech support. Steady Tap isn’t connected to any portal company. Every portal looks a little different. Ask your doctor’s office if you get stuck.
