How to Join a Zoom Call for Family or Club
What this helps with: Joining a Zoom video call from a link someone sent you, on a phone, tablet, or computer.
You don’t need a Zoom account to join someone else’s call. You only need the link they sent, or the meeting ID and passcode.
Before the call (do this once)
- Get the Zoom app. On a phone or tablet, open the App Store (iPhone or iPad) or Play Store (Android) and search for Zoom Workplace. Tap Get or Install.
- What you’ll tap: The app’s icon is a white video camera on a blue square.
- On a computer, you can skip the app and join from your web browser instead.
- Find the invitation. Look for an email, text, or calendar invite that says Join Zoom Meeting with a link under it. Write the meeting ID and passcode on paper if they’re listed.
Join the call
- Tap the link in the invitation a few minutes before the start time.
- If asked, tap Open to open it in the Zoom app. On a computer, you can also click Join from your browser.
- If asked for your name, type the name you’d like others to see, like “Grandma Rose.”
- Allow the camera and microphone if your device asks. Tap Allow or OK. Zoom needs these so family can see and hear you.
- Check your video and sound, then tap Join.
- If you see “Waiting for the host,” that’s normal. Stay on the screen. The host will let you in.
- Turn on your sound: If you can’t hear anyone, tap Join Audio, then Wi-Fi or Cellular Data (or Call using Internet Audio).
- What you’ll tap: The buttons along the bottom of the screen. Tap the screen once if they’re hidden.
- Mute and unmute: Tap the microphone button at the bottom left. A red line means others can’t hear you.
- When you’re done, tap Leave (top right on a phone, bottom right on a computer), then Leave meeting.
No smartphone? Join by phone call
If the invitation lists a phone number, call it from any phone. When asked, type the meeting ID and press #, then the passcode and #. You’ll hear the call, but there’s no video.
If something goes wrong
- “Invalid meeting ID.” Check the numbers carefully, or tap the link instead of typing.
- No one can hear me. Make sure the microphone button doesn’t have a red line. Tap Join Audio if you see it.
- I can’t see the others. Turn your phone sideways for a bigger picture. Check your Wi-Fi.
- The picture freezes. Move closer to your Wi-Fi router, or turn your video off for a moment.
- Someone you don’t know sends a Zoom link asking you to “verify your account” or pay. Don’t tap it. A real Zoom invitation only asks you to join a call.
