How to Update Your Phone (and Why It Matters)

What this helps with: Installing the latest software on your phone, and setting it to update by itself.

Why update? Updates fix problems and close security gaps. Apple calls keeping software up to date “one of the most important things you can do” for your device’s security. Turning on automatic updates means you don’t have to remember.

Before you start

  • Plug your phone in to charge. Android suggests at least 75% battery.
  • Connect to Wi-Fi. Updates are large.
  • Allow some time. It can take 15 to 60 minutes. You can’t use the phone while it installs.

On an iPhone

  1. Open Settings.
    • What you’ll tap: The gray gears icon.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Tap Software Update. Your iPhone checks for updates.
  4. If an update is ready, tap Update Now or Download and Install, and follow the steps. You’ll enter your passcode.
  5. Turn on automatic updates: On the same screen, tap Automatic Updates and turn on Automatically Install. Your iPhone will update overnight while it charges on Wi-Fi.
    • What you’ll tap: A switch that turns green.

On an Android phone

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap System, then Software updates (on Samsung: Software update, near the bottom).
  3. Tap Check for update or follow what the screen shows.
  4. If an update is ready, tap Download or Install, then Restart when asked.

Most Android phones also show a notification when an update is ready. You can tap it to start.

If something goes wrong

  • It says there isn’t enough space. On iPhone, tap Continue if it offers to remove apps for a while. They come back after the update. Or delete old videos you’ve already saved somewhere else.
  • The update seems stuck. Leave the phone plugged in and wait at least an hour. Android will try again by itself over the next few days.
  • My phone is too old for the newest version. Older phones can’t always run new software. It may still get security updates for a while. Ask the phone maker or your phone company.
  • A pop-up on a website says my phone “needs an update.” Close it. Real updates only come from Settings, never from a website pop-up or a text message link.
