What to Do When Your Phone Says “Storage Full”

What this helps with: Freeing up space so your phone can take photos, install updates, and run smoothly again.

“Storage full” means your phone’s memory is full of photos, videos, apps, and messages. Nothing is broken. A few minutes of tidying usually fixes it.

Step 1: See what’s using the space

  • iPhone: Open Settings, tap General, then iPhone Storage. A colored bar shows what’s taking room. Apps are listed below, biggest first.
  • Android: Open Settings and tap Storage. Tap a category to see what’s inside.

Step 2: Let your phone suggest what to remove

  • iPhone: On the iPhone Storage screen, look under Recommendations and tap Show All. Read each one, then tap Enable for the ones you like.
  • Android: In Storage, tap Free up space. Pick a category, tap Select files, choose what to remove, and tap Move files to Trash.

Step 3: The big space-savers

  1. Back up your photos, then remove the phone copies. Photos and videos use the most space. See our guide Back up your phone’s photos first.
    • iPhone: With iCloud Photos on, turn on Optimize iPhone Storage (Settings, your name, iCloud, Photos). Full-size photos stay in iCloud.
    • Android: In Google Photos, tap your profile picture, then Free up space on this device. This only removes photos that are already backed up.
  2. Delete old videos you don’t need. One long video can use as much space as hundreds of photos.
  3. Remove apps you don’t use.
    • iPhone: On the iPhone Storage screen, tap an app, then Offload App (keeps your data) or Delete App.
    • Android: Touch and hold the app’s icon, then tap Uninstall (or drag it to Uninstall).
    • Paid apps can be downloaded again for free later.
  4. Clear out old message attachments. Group chats full of videos and photos add up. Delete old conversations you don’t need.

If something goes wrong

  • I deleted a photo by mistake. Look in Recently Deleted (iPhone Photos, under Albums or Utilities) or Trash (Google Photos). Items usually stay there for 30 days or more.
  • I freed space but it’s full again quickly. Check for one app using a lot of space, like a messaging app with years of videos.
  • A pop-up or text says your phone is “infected” or “full” and gives a phone number or link. That’s a scam. Close it. Real storage warnings come from your phone’s Settings, not from websites or texts.
  • I’d rather have more cloud storage. Only buy it inside Settings (iPhone) or the Google One / Google Photos app (Android), never from a link in an email.
