How to Print from Your Phone or Tablet

What this helps with: Printing a photo, email, ticket, or document from your phone to a printer at home.

Most printers made in the last several years can print straight from a phone over Wi-Fi. No cables needed.

Before you start

  1. Turn the printer on and make sure it has paper and ink.
  2. Check that the printer is on your Wi-Fi. Many printers show a Wi-Fi light or a Wi-Fi symbol on their screen. If you’re not sure, the printer’s manual or the maker’s website explains how to connect it.
  3. Connect your phone to the same Wi-Fi network as the printer. Printing won’t work over cellular data.

iPhone or iPad

  1. Open what you want to print, such as a photo in Photos, an email in Mail, or a web page in Safari.
  2. Tap the Share button.
    • What you’ll tap: A square with an arrow pointing up. In Mail, tap the reply arrow at the bottom instead.
  3. Scroll down and tap Print.
  4. Tap No Printer Selected, then tap your printer’s name.
  5. Choose how many copies you want.
  6. Tap Print at the top right.

Android

  1. Open what you want to print, such as a photo in Google Photos, an email in Gmail, or a web page in Chrome.
  2. Tap the three dots (More) or the Share button, then tap Print.
    • In Chrome: tap the three dots, then Share, then Print.
  3. At the top, tap the printer name (or Select a printer), then choose your printer.
  4. Tap the round printer button to print.

If something goes wrong

  • My printer isn’t in the list. Make sure the printer and phone are on the same Wi-Fi. Turn the printer off and on, then try again.
  • Still not found on iPhone. Your printer may not support AirPrint. Apple keeps a list of printers that do (see the link below), or check with the printer’s maker.
  • Still not found on Android. Open Settings and search for Printing. Tap Default Print Service and make sure it’s on. If your printer still isn’t found, the maker’s own print app from the Play Store can help.
  • I don’t see a Print option. Not every app can print. Try opening the item in a different app, or take a screenshot and print that from your photos.
  • To cancel printing on iPhone, open the App Switcher and tap Print Center, then Cancel Printing.
