How to Make Text Bigger on Your Phone
What this helps with: Making the words on your iPhone or Android phone larger and easier to read.
This takes about two minutes, and you can always change it back.
On an iPhone
- Find and tap the Settings app.
- What you’ll tap: A gray icon that looks like a set of gears.
- Tap Display & Brightness.
- What you’ll tap: A line with a small blue icon showing “AA”. You may need to scroll down.
- Tap Text Size.
- Drag the slider to the right to make text bigger.
- What you’ll tap: Put your finger on the round dot at the bottom of the screen and slide it right. The sample text gets bigger as you go.
- Want it even bigger? Go back to Settings, tap Accessibility, then Display & Text Size, then Larger Text.
- Turn on Larger Accessibility Sizes, then drag the slider to the size you like.
- What you’ll tap: A switch next to the words. It turns green when it’s on.
On an Android phone
Menus can look a little different on each brand of phone (Samsung, Google Pixel, Motorola, and others). Using the search box in Settings works on most of them.
- Find and tap the Settings app.
- What you’ll tap: An icon that looks like a gear.
- Tap the search box at the top and type Font size.
- What you’ll tap: A magnifying glass or a bar that says “Search settings.”
- Tap Font size in the results.
- Drag the slider to the right to make text bigger.
- (Optional) Make everything bigger, including buttons and icons: search for Display size and move that slider to the right too.
- (Optional) Make letters thicker: go to Settings, then Accessibility, then Display size and text, and turn on Bold text.
If something goes wrong
- Some apps didn’t get bigger. Not every app follows this setting. That’s normal and not something you did wrong.
- Buttons are now hard to tap, or words get cut off. The text may be a little too big. Go back and move the slider one step to the left.
- I can’t find the setting. On Android, try the search box again with “text size.” Older Android phones may name things a little differently.
- I want to undo it. Follow the same steps and slide the dot back to the middle. On Android, you can also tap Reset settings.
